Improving Understanding of Alcohol-Related Brain Damage Through Experience, Education & Advocacy
At ARBD Awareness Consultancy Ltd, our mission is to improve understanding, awareness and professional support for people affected by Alcohol-Related Brain Damage (ARBD) and Korsakoff Syndrome.
Despite growing awareness around mental health and neurological conditions, ARBD remains widely misunderstood and under-recognised — not only within the general public, but also across many frontline services and professional sectors. Too often, individuals living with ARBD are seen simply as “alcoholics” rather than people living with a serious and complex brain condition requiring understanding, structure, rehabilitation and long-term support.
Our work is built on over 20 years of practical frontline experience working directly with individuals affected by ARBD within specialist residential services. Since 2006, we have supported people living with severe alcohol-related cognitive impairment, behavioural difficulties, memory loss, self-neglect and complex support needs.
What makes our approach different is that our knowledge comes not only from clinical information or textbooks, but from years of direct daily experience working alongside people living with this condition. Through observation, rehabilitation work, enablement programmes and long-term support, we have developed practical understanding of the real-life challenges faced by individuals with ARBD and the professionals supporting them.
Over the years, we have seen that with the right structure, abstinence, support and rehabilitation, some individuals can make meaningful progress and regain levels of independence — while others may require ongoing specialist care and long-term support. We believe that better understanding and earlier recognition of ARBD can significantly improve outcomes and quality of life.
Working in this field, we understand that staff will need to learn new processes whilst families will often have to re-evaluate their lives.
