On Wednesday 12th July we launched our ‘Spread The Word’ campaign to a small group of friends, well-wishers and professionals in Weston super Mare. Our message – that abuse of alcohol and a poor diet can lead to permanent brain damage – will now start to be passed by word of mouth and it will grow. If that is all that happens then we will be pleased with our efforts. But that was not the only message we released on Wednesday. We have a message for t…hose who have friends or relatives who may be on the way to Korsakoff’s syndrome for it is unlikely that a person who is abusing alcohol will recognise the signs themselves. If you know the signs and symptoms that lead to Wernicke’s encephalopathy then intervention can help. If a person with WE stops drinking and maintains a good diet then a cure is possible. We know that will not be easy for friends or family but it’s a start. The alternative is progress towards Korsakoff’s psychosis and permanent brain damage.
